What can I do on my Trip to Gozo
One of the primary reasons thousands of people choose Gozo holidays is the island’s natural beauty. Gozo island is an unspoilt paradise, perfect for anyone who loves nature and exploring their natural surroundings.
Walking, cycling and hiking are some of the main draws for many people holidaying in Gozo. The fact that the island does not have traffic problems like much of the rest of the Med, means walkers can enjoy an uninterrupted jaunt around the island, taking in the wildlife and plants at their leisure.
In the summer, the best time for walking is in the evening or first thing in the morning, before Gozo’s hot sun has started to bake down – then surely it’s simply time to hit the beach or the pool!
So what is there to see while you are trekking around our beautiful island?
First stop must be the the Azure Window. Anyone on holiday in Gozo should visit this natural phenomenon – a 50 metre-high arch in the rock at Dweira Point cliffs. The sea pounding against Gozo island has worn a hole in the rock over millions of years forming an amazing natural arch. The locals call the Window ‘Tieqa’ in Maltese. Anyone visiting should do so when the sea is rough as this makes the spectacular geological site even more dreamlike and dramatic.
Second stop on any walking tour of Gozo Island must be Fungus Rock. This is famous site among islanders as it is where a special fungus grows that has medicinal qualities. The Knights of St John used the fungus and valued it so highly that anyone caught trying to pilfer the precious fungus was sentenced to death. The cliff is very high at Fungus rock, so the knight devised a special carrying hoist to allow them to transport the fungus from the rock to the Gozo mainland.
Keen divers can explore the rock from underwater where sheer walls and gullies make for a wonderful natural habitat for many types of fish.
Once you’ve had your fill of natural sites, a trip to the island’s capital Victoria is a must for anyone visiting Gozo. A Gozo holiday simply would not be complete without a visit to this charming town.
The Medieval town was given the name Victoria in 1887 in honour of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Gozo’s Victoria now consists of the old Citadel and the old suburb, which used to be known as Rabat. A range of historic and cultural sites are available to visitors to Gozo, not least the Citadel itself. This fortified old city offers staggering views of the rest of the island. Within the walls are Gozo’s cathedral and Law Courts, as well as the cathedral museum, which is worth a look for anyone interested in the history of this part of the city.
Victoria is a great place from which to start a Gozo holiday as it has a large range of accommodation and restaurants boasting stylish and affordable rooms and villas, as well as gourmet delights for those eager to discover delicious Maltese cuisine.
